The GSA is the only school in Africa to run the renowned Unit System, a uniquely transformational pedagogical environment that places student experience and imagination at the heart of their studies. We encourage an open-ended, experimental spirit of enquiry that responds to shifts in society, technology and culture. We promote excellence across all our programmes, constantly challenging our staff and students to think beyond the boundaries of the profession and discipline as we currently understand them.

MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE (Design, Theory and Practice)

Master of Architecture (Design, Theory and Practice) (M8DT1Q)

This is a recently introduced, non-professional programme, which has been offered in 2020 for the first time. The programme is aimed at students who either already have a professional qualification in architecture (MArch or Master’s equivalent) or at students holding a BArchHons or PGDip in Architecture, who wish to pursue advanced architectural design research. The research-based, one-year (or two-year, part-time) programme, is open to students who seek an opportunity to develop their own research in a topic of their interest – once this is aligned with the supervising capacity of the GSA. Throughout the academic year, students will be involved in a number of activities, for example, seminars and colloquia, leading to the production of their final dissertation.
