Master of Architecture (Degree in Design, Theory and Practice)

The Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg was founded in 2015 with a simple mandate: to transform contemporary African architectural education. Located in Johannesburg, one of the world’s most exciting and challenging cities, the school aims to offer a world-class architectural education to our students. Convened by Prof. António Tomás, the GSA is offering for the second year a Master of Architecture (Degree in Design, Theory and Practice) that intends to equip students with skills and knowledge to enable them to pursue professional careers within and beyond  architectural practice, in government, NGO’s, research institutions and in academia.  The programme is also geared towards preparing candidates for studies at PhD level.  The programme focuses on a key number of areas of interest such as architectural theory, history of architecture, urban design, urban social theory and processes of urbanisation in Africa.

The GSA hereby requests interested applicants to submit the following:

1) a short research proposal (1-2 pages), detailing research areas;

2) names of two referees in the position to vouch for the applicant;

3) a 2-3 page CV; and

4) a 1-2 page cover letter.

Prospective students might be required to spend at least one semester in Johannesburg to take part in the regular seminars the programme offers and for the public presentation of their research proposals. Whereas the GSA does not offer bursaries for students to attend the programme, students will be encouraged to apply for the internal funding opportunities offered by the University of Johannesburg and for external funding such as the National Research Foundation.
